Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to question certain decisions from the official, following the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
